The city of Kaunas began to be built at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris more than 600 years ago. The current old town, which Kaunas is proud of, is the place where the history of the city began. To this day, many impressive architectural monuments can be seen here.

Kaunas Old Town is the oldest part of Kaunas city. Located east of the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, near which is the Santakos Park.
There is almost no industry in the Old Town (the largest surviving building is the former "Lituanica" factory), historical, cultural and residential buildings prevail, and there is limited car traffic. The main street - Vilniaus Street - runs from west to east, paved with stones.
From the 12th century to 1540, a radial structure developed, later switching to a rectangular one.

This zone covers the area near the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, bounded by Šv. Gertrūda Street (from Kaunas Castle to Gimnazijos Street), Gimnazijos Street, Birštonas Street, and Karaliaus Mindaugas Avenue (from Birštonas Street to Aleksotas Street), excluding A. Mapu Street.
Entry into this zone is subject to a 2-euro fee, which also includes the first hour of parking.
