At the beginning of the 20th century, the Hill of Crosses became a sacred place; it was well attended, services and indulgences were held. People who came from all over Lithuania built crosses of vows and thanks on the mountain and at its foot.
There are more than 200,000 different crosses, chapel pillars, holy statues and paintings on the mountain and on its slopes, more than 50 crosses are registered in the Register of Cultural Values, many rosaries and crosses are hung on them. The Hill of Crosses is adapted for visitors, equipped with oak stairs and paths (maintained since 1989); is widely visited by pilgrims (of various denominations) and tourists from various countries of the world.
