The yeshiva (Jewish school) that used to be here educated many famous personalities. Vilijampolė, located on the right bank of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, was previously called Slabada, Slabodke, Vilijampoli. Even now, the name Slabodkė is often used in colloquial speech among Kaunas residents. In the wild 90s, this district was famous for criminal gangs.
In the narrow sense, Vilijampolė is only the district closest to the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. There are a lot of old wooden houses here, a significant part of which is in very poor condition. The part located higher along the Neris (to the north) is called Paneris. To the west of the old part of Vilijampolė, near the port, is Mikalinava, and even further west, around the Veršvas stream, is Veršvai. Further, beyond the western Kaunas bypass, Kaniūkai begins, which extends all the way to Nevėžys. Vilijampolė eldership also includes Lampėdžiai - a small district located between Lake Lampėdis and the Nemunas.
In recent years, old Vilijampolė has also undergone changes. A new Piliamiestis apartment block is being built here, located opposite the Old Town. A Kėdainiai bridge is planned between Santaka and the port, which will connect Vilijampolė and Šilainiai with Aleksotas.
